This song is about a Turkish woman who got repeatedly raped by a distant relative, who threatened to murder her children if she spoke out; she also fell pregnant following one of the rapes. Eventually she had enough and killed the perpetrator by shooting him and then beheading him. She is said to have taken the head to her village square and tossed it in front of some men who she believed knew about the rapes as the perpetrator was apparently bragging about his deeds within the community. Firstly, the song voices support for Nevin as a rape victim who defended herself. Secondly, the song also questions the underlying issue of male dominance/patriarchy. It was written in the media that Nevin retaliated eventually because the perpetrator destroyed her 'honour'. This concept of honour is telling in a way as that Nevin appears not to have reacted to the physical violence that has been done to her but to the loss of perceived 'honour'. This honour is arguably a concept created by men to keep women 'in line'. Nevin was also unable to have an abortion as it was past Turkey's legal limit date line. Depending on the sources you read, apparently a women needs consent from her husband (not sure about that) and she did not want to tell her husband about what has been done to her. The Turkish media was quick to portrait Nevin as the villain and the rapist as the victim. After the killing Nevin was denied abortion and had to bear the child, which she rejected. President Erdogan's wife officially named the child which would have even more demonised Nevin. In 2017 some allegations have surfaced claiming that Nevin would have had some help when cutting off the head. Her sentence was appealed but she was later resentenced again to life imprisonment. But even if she did not cut off the perpetrator's head herself, this does not change a bit the underlying misogynist logic of patriarchal Turkish culture. Nevin has become somewhat of a symbol for the Turkish feminist movement in their ongoing struggle.
